Fort Steele Heritage Town

Welcome to Fort Steele, the fun capital of East Kootenay. The steam railway goes through here now, transporting both adults and children back to a friendlier, more carefree time. Walk into the luxury of the North-West Mounted Police Officers' Quarters and imagine Galbraith's Ferry in 1887, sitting down to dinner with a full table service and servants in the back room. Or walk out and catch a wagon pulled by large black Clydesdale horses. The ride through time is pungent with odours from the bakery (and the horses), the field crops (and the horses) and the flower gardens (and the horses).
Let your youngsters follow the White Polish, Barred Rock, Black Giants and other 19th century breeds of chickens as they wander the site. Tiring of that they may want to watch our young Cotsold lambs gambol about the pasture. They are part of a small herd of this rare breed that Fort Steele is trying to build. The amusements for young children are legion, and we haven't even talked about the 19th century confection and candy store located on site.
For those craving more substance, there are fifty exhibit buildings to delight all ages, as well as incredibly successful street drama presentations. Follow the series of vignettes as they occur throughout the site, and get exposed to history as your history teacher never imagined it. Fort Steele Heritage Town is a happening place. |

The Glass House
